Spatio-seasonal conditional risk of upward lightning over the eastern Alps

The different datasets contain modeled cumulative number of hours exceeding a conditional probability of upward lightning over 45 ◦ N-50 ◦ N and 8 ◦ E-17 ◦ E at hourly and 1 km2 grid cell resolution. The models are random forests based on direct upward lightning observations at the Gaisberg Tower in Salzburg, Austria (2000 to 2015 and mid 2020-2023) linked to 35 larger-scale meteorological reanalysis data. The modeled probabilities are called conditional due to a balanced model setup of equally large situations with and without upward lightning at the Gaisberg Tower.

Data are used in the article "Spatio-seasonal conditional risk of upward lightning over the eastern Alps" (https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2403.18853)
