This map series is a four-part investigation of the wildfire risks that California faces, the grants available through FEMA to communities at risk of or impacted by wildfires and associated hazards, and real-life stories of communities that benefited from Hazard Mitigation Assistance in the face of fire. Part one, "California Wildfire Conditions," looks into historic California wildfires and the factors that contribute to the size, spread, and destructiveness of wildfires in California. Part two, "Devestation in a Flash," examines Mariposa County after the Detwiler and Ferguson Fires, and the role mitigation can play in breaking the cycle of natural disasters. Part three, "Lake Valley: Mitigating Fire Risk in the Built Environment," is an account of the Lake Valley Fire Protection District's effort to protect homes in the Wildland-Urban Interface against wildfire through the Hazardous Wood Roof Replacement Program. Part four, "FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance", details the resources available to communities to protect against and recover from Wildfires and associated hazards. This story map series is presented by FEMA to engage and inform fire-prone communities.
